Teaching Philosophy
Fundamentally, my goal as a teacher is to create a positive and healthy environment for student growth, experimentation and foster positive relationships between all faculty and students. I believe that all students have the ability to be successful in the art classroom under the philosophy that teaching is about relationships, interactions and connections. With the belief and understanding that art can teach more than just tactile skills, I focus on how art can further emotional expression, analyzation, conceptual meaning, planning and executing goals. Art teaches the very act of creativity. I believe that we all have the ability to be, think and act creatively. Creativity is a vital skill that can further the success of every student throughout their lives. Art is a form of visual communication that can cross the boundaries of language. These skills—this act of creativity and teaching how to think creatively—are fundamental not just to artists but to society as a whole. I want to encourage determination. I want to show students that they can be creative, that their ideas have worth, and that art is a practiced skill—not just a birth given talent. I believe talent is an ability to learn a skill faster than another, they can still reach the same goal but at different rates. I want encourage them to find their own interests, passions, and voice that can help further their understanding of not just themselves but the world around them. I want to give them the basics; the foundation of art; something they can build upon to reach new heights. When a student graduates and leaves my influence, my goal is that they will be creative, well-rounded individuals, with a clear understanding of their personal voice to be successful in their artistic career.
Modern students are greatly influenced by modern technology. Instant gratification greatly affects the art classroom today. Art takes time, patience, and thoughtfulness. It is not an instant product. Technology can also have positive effects in the art classroom: it offers research opportunities and an entire new medium with new artistic tools to explore. However, I still believe that students need a firm base of traditional artistic skills and knowledge in order to successfully use technology as a tool for art. Fundamental skills such as: drawing, proportion, color, depth and perspective are vital to have for any artist in any medium.
In conclusion, my teaching philosophy is that I will approach each student as a unique individual artist, and as a teacher it is my job to help further their growth, strengthen their voice, foster creativity and encourage independence as the artist that they are.
